A practical research workflow
Topic Cluster Examples: A SaaS Page Map
A topic cluster connects pages that help the same audience complete related tasks. It does not require a separate page for every keyword variant. Start with a useful pillar and make every supporting page earn its place.

A complete software page map
Editorial teaching example: a hypothetical weekly product-feedback digest for a small SaaS team. Queries, routes and decisions below are practice material, not a customer study or measured keyword demand. No measured search volume, difficulty, revenue or ranking outcome is assigned to these candidates.
| Proposed URL / format | Main and supporting terms | Required output | Internal links | Excluded / release dependency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| /learn/product-feedback · Pillar guide | product feedback / feedback collection; feedback review | Explain collect → group → review → decide, with a navigation map. | Digest workflow; prioritization method; template | HR surveys, product reviews. Teaching proposal; not a published site. |
| /feedback-digest · Product workflow page | weekly product feedback digest / customer feedback weekly summary; feedback digest for small SaaS teams | Show a real digest and explain inputs, review and source links. | Template; methodology; related prioritization guide | Unbuilt Slack integration, unverified price. Requires a working product before launch. |
| /templates/feedback-digest · Editable resource | feedback digest template / weekly customer feedback report template | Provide fields for request, source, owner, decision and follow-up. | Workflow; prioritization method | Broad tool comparisons. Teaching resource represented by the download below. |
| /learn/prioritize-feature-requests · Method guide | how to prioritize feature requests / feature request prioritization | Walk through conflicting requests and explain a decision. | Pillar; digest template; product workflow | Claims of automatic correct prioritization. Requires a complete worked method. |
| /compare/customer-feedback-tools · Comparison | customer feedback software / customer feedback tools | Compare source capture, review and access conditions with evidence. | Pillar; template; product workflow when relevant | Unverified superiority claims. Requires current product research/testing. |

Should the pillar be an article or a directory?
Choose a guide when the visitor needs a sequence and explanation. In this example, the pillar should explain collect → group → review → decide, show a small worked review and route readers to templates or deeper methods. A bare menu would not teach that task.
Choose a directory when finding and filtering many items is the task, such as browsing feedback tools by supported source. It needs useful inventory and selection criteria. An article can contain navigation; a directory can contain explanation. The decision comes from the promised output, not whether the URL contains “blog”.
Keep “customer feedback weekly summary” on the digest workflow page unless result and user evidence demand a different output. Keep the template separate because downloading and editing an artifact is a distinct task.
Use internal links to advance the task
- The pillar links to “prepare a weekly digest” when the reader needs a review artifact, and to “prioritize feature requests” when the decision is what to build.
- The template explains when to use it and links back to the method. It does not need to link every cell to every other page.
- A comparison points to the workflow only where it is a suitable option. A product page links to evidence and limitations before asking for a purchase.
- Do not publish integration, free-tool or pricing pages until the claimed output and access conditions exist.
Turn the map into release checks
Download the editable example page map and the blank map, and a usable feedback digest template. For each row, assign a task, output, owner, evidence gap and acceptance criterion. Publish the smallest coherent group that can actually deliver.
Start with primary and secondary keyword selection, then check overlapping pages. Before publishing, compare existing tags with the Meta extractor and draft the result using the SERP preview.
Check your own seed keyword
Move from a proposed task to keyword evidence. Custom research follows the existing account and credit limits.
